Normandy!

We took a little day trip last week to the Northern coast of France.
The train dropped us off in Bayeux where there's this lovely church (one of the few not destroyed in WWII,) and does anyone else know what's in Bayeaux?

Anyone?

The Bayeux Tapestry of course! 200 (ish) feet of embroidery made in 1061 to tell the story of how William the Conqueror became such, and changed his name from what it was previously.
Hooray! I went to a 2 hour lecture on this last semester, now I'm a total pro.
Bayeux is a lovely town, and stayed very much intact in the war.
The American Cemetary was where we spent the day. France has officially given the land to the United States in gratitude for the sacrifices made.
The visitor's center was really well done and highlighted the lives of many of the men who died on the shores. I hadn't realized how many young men did die until I walked amongst the many crosses that represent their sacrifices.
Then we went down to Omaha beach, where there were more casualties than the three (or four) other shores.
It was interesting to be suddenly reimmersed in so much american-ness, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
