Altered States

I installed this installation yesterday for my New Genre class, a class that I'm not enrolled in because of scheduling conflicts, but the teacher (who is rad-tacular) is letting me participate none the less. I'm trying to work with water in my artworks at this stage of artistic progression. It is such a universal subject and symbol in addition to my love of water, swimming etc. For this piece, I used a large block of ice (which I froze myself) as my main subject. As time progresses, the ice will naturally melt and change from its solid to its liquid state. Much like all of us, we change with time, maturing mentally, emotionally, physically with day to day efforts. However, there are times in our lives that cause radical change in those areas: puberty, mission, marriage, tragedies, etc. This is represented with the salt. It acts as a catalyst that increases the rate of changing which is already occurring. The state of water is transported on a journey into the tract of the tube, having the ability to twist and turn, much more flexible and "fluid" then the previous, frozen state. The water filled tube with excess length stands still waiting with great potential, having the choice to go where ever it needs to go. My class had a lot of fun playing with the salt and ice. I liked that. I had yet to test anything so everything that occurred was a complete surprise. The coolest thing is the texture formed as the dissolved salt water ran down the sides creating a wood like texture.

FAREWELL TO CORBIN

Sunday was wonderful being able to bid goodbye to Corbin for two years. We enjoyed the meeting where he and his two best friends (also about to go out) spoke. We then headed to the Alvords to have a wonderful dinner, advice to the missionary segment and visiting with family.

One of the highlights of the day was Great Grandpa, Dad, Uncle Jon and Uncle Chris singing a missionary medley. Hope you enjoy the rehearsal I captured below. Man can those Cornwall boys sing.
Nice to hear Great-great Grandpa Cornwall's GOLDEN PLATES , which is not sung much any more.

CORNWALL COUSIN

From time to time perhaps some of you kids might be interested in what one of your cousins is up to. In this case Tiffany Alvord was recently in Atlanta as part of a pursuit to make a name for herself in the pop music scene. Recently, Aunt Cherie sent us the link to this tune that Tiffany wrote and performs.

It's fun to read her fan comments.

Our Little Chatterbox

Bennett has really been chatting up a storm lately and we are loving every second of it. He has also been giggling, shakin belly and everything but those have been a little harder to catch on camera. We will though. It is very very cute!

CORNWALL CAMPING?

Let's see... it wasn't scout camp,... it wasn't girl's camp,... it wasn't Father's & Sons,... and we find the Cornwall Hilton tent pitched in mountains?
It was Mom & Dad on a little get away, who found a great campsite up Angeles Crest... in fact we had our pick of the ENTIRE campground. Because... we were the ONLY campers at the site.
This is the first time Mom has been family camping since she was about 6 years old. Boy, was she a trooper. (Of course the queen size air mattress, with 4 quilts and her own bed pillow helped a lot.)
Dad did most of the cooking... steak and potatoes for dinner on the fire and ....
Sausage, eggs and hashbrowns for breakfast.
After breakfast we went for a little hike up in the rocks for which Horseflats is famous.
It was nice to be in the mountains, at 6000 ft,. during the first day of a 100+ heatwave here in L.A.

Nishat Khan Concert

Jeff and I were fortunate to hear one of the greatest sitarist in the world come play right here at BYU! He's from northern India and played two hour-long ragas for the concert. He was accompanied by an amazing tabla player (small drums) and explained some of the intricacies of Indian music. A friend explained the experience like this, I'll probably never get to hear any other individual who's as much advanced at his instrument as this man. Plus, I got to meet him afterwards!

Watch the video - it's truly incredible!

Every morning (and a couple times a night) I wake up to this cute smiling face. We love our happy happy boy!!

SATURDAY IS A SPECIAL DAY

Zak Cole Eagle Slide Show

Mom and Dad were honored to be invited to Jennifer McGavin's wedding on Saturday morning. Having been inspired by Katie's reception at the Monrovia building the court and cultural hall were turned into a lovely setting for the outdoor ceremony and the indoor reception.

Mom left the reception to attend the Heather Beck funeral. Later that afternoon Mom attended the Stevenson twin baby shower. Later, later Dad was at the Court of Honor, which had 3 fine Eagles - Zac Cole, Jared Colton & Jeffrey Stacey, for whom Dad did the Eagle slide shows. (Maybe we will post one of the slide shows one of these days if anyone wants to see how... aghemm... great they are.)

COOL 'CATS

For the first time in 16 years there is no Wildcat living at 336. But 336 was a Wildcat den for half of the years we have lived in the Gem of the Foothills so we like to take notice of things MHS.
This was front page in the paper this morning.
Last night was a nice win to christen the new MHS stadium.
Click HERE for link to last night's game stats.

A few weeks ago Monrovia was highlighted in a special newspaper insert with a cover story and feature articles. Soooo.... for all you Wildcat Alums who still have a little green and white blood in your veins... read on...
