MILWAUKEE MEMOIR

Mom and Dad arrived in Milwaukee on Friday May 17th for the Twelmeyer open house at the Twelmeyer home in Wauwatosa. It was a wonderful time to meet many Twelmeyer relatives, friends and neighbors. Saturday Mom and Dad were treated to a tour of Milwaukee including the architectural wonder Milwaukee Art Museum, a drive up the North Shore, custard at the famous Kopps, dinner that evening at the town's finest Germain restaurant all intermingled with a lot of lovely chatting . Mom and Dad did a little touring on their own from their lovely Bed and Breakfast which was just around the corner from Marquette University (who held their graduation this same weekend) and also the stately Captain Fredrick Pabst historic mansion. It was so fun at the B&B Rachel and Spencer joined Mom and Dad for breakfast on Monday.  Spencer then directed the group to the historic Third Ward district of downtown.  One more dish of custard then Rachel made it a threesome on the return to California so she could catch her flight to Thailand.

Elizabeth's Birthday

We were in California for Elizabeth's birthday.  In the morning we went to the Kids Space Museum in Pasadena.  (I remember going there when I was in Kindgarten.)  We then partied all afternoon at Great Grandpa Cornwalls.  We went swimming in the pool
We opened presents.  ( I have many pictures of me opening presents on this couch, but when it was orange.)

 Yummy birthday Cake
 Building with her new legos
Oh, I love my big Elizabeth girl.  She is such a wonderful daughter and sister.  She is helpful around the house.  She is so kind to her brothers and is a great helper with Hannah.  She loves to read and write.  She is very artistic and I am so grateful she has been a part of my life for 6 years.

Take me Out to the ball game

We signed Daniel up for a Baseball class at the local community center and he loved it.  He practiced hitting, catching, throwing, and running.  He was awesome.  He was a great listener.  He was always first in line.  He was helpful in retrieving the baseball.  He was good at sharing.   He was amazing at hitting the ball and running around the bases.  Of course he was on the DODGERS.  I don't think there were many kids in his class you have actually been to the a real MBL stadium of the team they were on.  GO DODGERS!!!!!!

Daniel's Birthday

Waking up to a birthday parade
German Pancakes for breakfast.  Daniel's favorite food.
Trip to the  Dinosaur Museum with cousin Peter
 Playing the Drums
 Digging for Dinosaurs
Daniel was in a Baseball class and decided to have a baseball themed birthday.  So we had Baseball Pizza for dinner.
 A Baseball Cake
 Yummy
I love my big boy Daniel and will never forget the day he was born.

First day in Bangkok

Here we are. It is a riot. I love it here. We have had lots of interesting food, gone to markets and seen LOTS of buddhist temples. Thailand has some aspects of extreme modernity and simultaneously appears to be incredibly poor. I am learning so much about life here. I've got lots more pictures, I'll post soon. Also, the group I'm with is awesome, we are having too much fun here.

Paisley's Last Day of 1st Grade

Thursday was Paisley's last day of school. Paisley's teacher Mrs. Hixon took some pictures of the activities that day so we decided to make a little video to show you all the fun stuff she did.
(WARNING: the music is a little loud)

Thai-Landing

An email was received from Rachel this morning.  We have been anxious to hear from her since the drop-off at LAX Wed night..
We're here. Our flight got in late to Taipei and so I didn't have time to send out the word. I slept on both the flights, which was great - I'm feeling really fantastic. Jacob [the BYU professor over the program] met us in Bangkok - so we took the train into the city. It is awesome here. It is hot, and green, and urban. I'm in love.

The girls are totally awesome, this group is great. I've been chatting with Jacob about all the research we'll be doing. It's going to be very great.

Also - I DO have a phone. The best way to call (per Jacob) is Skype, if you put credit on, it's only 3 cents a minute. I don't have my phone yet, but when I do I'll give you a call.

Love you guys so much.
Hope you're doing well.
love, Rach

Thailand!

At Dad's suggestion, I've included a little map of where we'll be in Thailand.

The map in blue shows some of the major cities; I land in Bangkok Friday morning. It's the capital of Thailand and the biggest city in the country. We'll spend a few days there seeing some of the bigger tourist sites. Then we'll head to the Nan Province, near Pua, specifically in the village of Paklang, which has a notoriously Hmong population (highlighted in red.)

While we're there, we will all conduct different research projects. I'm studying the effects of medicalization on childbirth rituals. We're staying with host families and we'll eat with them twice a day. We have translators to conduct interviews, and we will also hold class once a week to workshop our research topics. At one point near the end of the trip we will go to Chiang Mai University (it's about four hours southwest of Paklang) and share ideas with the personnel there.

I leave tonight to get on a plane at 1am. I have a layover in Taipei, Taiwan and the flight is around 11 hours, I think. Then it's another few hours to Bangkok. I get back on August 9th. The time difference is 14 hours between Bangkok and LA, and 11 hours between Columbus and LA, etc.

Anyhow, I plan on checking my email everyday (nyevegrl@gmail.com), and although I will have a phone, I probably won't make any calls from it. But I shall blog!

Love love love! See you in Bangkok.

Amazing Woman

I am thinking of Our wonderful prophet and his family today.
I know his heart must hurt as he faces the rest of his life without his wife.
Yet what an incredible woman she was to stand beside him through so many years of dedicated service to the church.  She herself was an amazing humanitarian. She served with him, by his side while serving in so many capacities herself.  I am grateful for the example both President Monson and Sister Monson are.
Our prayers are with him now.
And we are celebrating her life.

Dropping Sister Cornwall off

After a nice lunch with Jeff and Reesa, at Jeff's school, we dropped off Sister Cornwall at the MTC.  It was a fun experience for my kids to understand what the MTC (Missionary Training Center) is.  Elizabeth and I cried and cried as we drove away.  I explained to my kids that sometimes the things that Heavenly Father asks us to do are hard and we are so proud of Sister Cornwall for doing exactly what Heavenly Father wants her to do.

A New Mission... A New Blog

Sarah left today for the MTC for 4 - 6 weeks of training in Provo and then she will go to the California Santa Rosa Mission. Sarah has created a blog to stay posted on her special mission Comings and Goings. When the below image appears, click on it to get the latest news and letters from our Santa Rosa missionary.
