ON THE JOB

Today we will finish up on the Maternal Side for Gracie Gilbert Smith -  Beverly's grandma, and the silent picture pianist.  Remember, her dad owned the Gilbert Store in Murray.  Gracie's grandfather on her mother's side was John Morgan.  The pictures above are both of John.  He emigrated to Utah after joining the church.  He had three interesting jobs.  First he was a Post Master, then a Road Supervisor (not quite sure what that entails) and then he was a School Trustee.  All three of these jobs seem so unrelated - wish we had more information.  John's father - Joseph Morgan died very early when John was a young boy.  He was a brick mason in those short years between when he was married and when he died.  John's father in law,  Joshua Hague Gillett was a collier?  Anyone know what a collier was, is?  It is a really fancy name for coal miner or someone who carries or sells coal.  That really finishes up the Smith/Gilbert line for ON THE JOB.  Next week, we will start on the Player/Spencer line - some really interesting vocations in that group.

A Lot Can Change in Nine Years!

Nine years ago today the Arcadia Stake Presidency was reorganized.  We were fortunate enough to have Jason and Stefanie in Palmdale, Marybeth West of the Mississippi and Robb, Marybeth, Katie and Dallin willing to come to California for a quick trip. It was a special day being taught by Elder Holland and the past nine years have been such a blessing to me and dad.  One thing hasn't changed - HOW HANDSOME DAD IS!!!

Below is the "club" that dad hangs out with every Wednesday night.  In the fact the photo was taken last night.  Pres. Terrill replaced Pres. Steimle a year ago.  Craig Helsop is the able Stake Clerk (and has been carrying the double load as Stake Exec. Secretary for many months).  Jack Hagan is the Stake Finance Clerk who has dependably served since the previous Stake Presidency.  Wednesday nights will be very different in a couple of weeks.  Dad had Bishopric Meeting every Wed. night for 7 1/2 years immediately followed by Stake Presidency meeting for the last 9.

It's A Burger, It's A Hot Dog, No... It's a HamDog

Dad and I had the Swansons over for a barbecue on Friday evening.  The Swansons agreed and requested they bring their secret back-woods-of-Florida family recipe for a hybrid delicacy - a HAMDOG.  The process takes a lot of time and care.
  • First take turkey dogs (they must be turkey dogs) and slice vertically, all the way through the dog stopping the incision about an inch from each end. Now place a 2nd vertical slice 90 degrees rotated from the first, again stopping about an inch from each end.
  • Next prepare non-lean ground beef with your choice of seasoning, including diced onions, Worcestershire sauce, bacon bits, etc... Roll ground beef around a 3/8" square stick of cheddar cheese to form a torpedo of hamburger a little fatter than the diameter of the dog and two inches shorter.
  • Insert the ground beef tube into the slices of the hot dog kneading it until the ground beef oozes out of each side of the dog.  The cross section of the ground beef is squeezed into the form of a "+". You now have a pregnant dog.
  • Grill as you would a regular hot dog.  The dog being turkey does not tend to burn while the ground beef cooks.  Being non-lean, the grease in the ground beef helps cook the dog and the ground beef.
  • Serve in a hot dog bun with condiments to your liking.

A bit of effort, but the reward is so worth it! Thanks Swansons.  This certainly not the last time HamDogs grace the Cornwall grill.

Safe & Sound

We just had a Skype session with Sarah in London.  We bet she will post about her lovely flight and adventures with trains, tickets, transfers, stairs, luggage, the Tower of London and an AWOL roommate.

We are so happy she is there and all is well, all is well... Whew! and Yahoo!

Sarah's Journey

It was fun to spend the last 5 days with Sarah as she prepared to leave for her semester abroad in Madrid, with a week "lay-over" in London on the way.  3-4 months ago Sarah booked her flight to London on "budget" Norwegian Air.  We were concerned how comfortable it would be.

Check out the Dreamliner 787 jet on which Sarah has spent the last 9 hours and 36 minutes.

Her flight, though running late, looks really comfortable:

After arriving in Gatwick Airport she will take the Thameslink South train to London, then switch to the Underground  The plan is to meet her roommate at the tube station to get to her Airbnb which is near the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge.

For those who want to stay updated!

So I am on my way! I am just waiting in the airport now! My plane was a little delayed but it gave me the opportunity to make my blog post before I left! I am a little nervous about the start of this big trip, but then I realize that I am going to the one place I have always wanted to travel to so it can't be too bad! Well Happy Travels!

LONDON

Here is someone else flying to London just around this date 41 years ago.  These pictures are of Kent at the Salt Lake Airport with his Mom, Lenore and Grandma Maude Neeley above and Grandpa J. Spencer Cornwall below.

I have always loved this picture of Kent and Jon at the airport.  Shows the age difference pretty drastically.  CUTE BOYS!!!  Sarah we will be thinking of you on your flight today.
