Since we moved into our house, we've wanted to make the big dirt pile in our backyard into a garden, and we've slowly made progress. This last Saturday we pushed through the last couple steps and got everything prepped. The first step (other than pulling mountains of weeds and grass) was to rent a roto-tiller from home depot and rip through all the soil. And Spencer did a brilliant job turning the soil and controlling that machine.
Then we made boxes for raised beds, and filled them with a soil cocktail of topsoil, compost, peat moss and fertilizer.
Finally we got some plants in (with LOTS of help from Spencer's mom, who grew up on a farm and is a total pro) and we're trying out everything we can to see what grows. The list includes: carrots, tomatoes (cherry and heirloom), sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, buttercrunch lettuce, napa cabbage, red onions, potatoes, rhubarb, and one cantaloupe. We've also got basil, parsley, oregano, cilantro and thyme. As long as we get to make fresh salsa ONCE with spoils from our garden, we'll be happy.

That looks totally, really, amazingly great. Hmm, let me know when your salsa party is so I can drop by.
