My Astronomy Poem

Astronomy

Daytime oblivion because of the bright light

It seems only apparent in the dark of the night

Even then, its vastness is beyond comprehension

And yet we understand it through study and observation

Which started primeval with men full of hope

And has led to the beauty of the Hubble telescope

It seems like all there is to know is before our eyes

Then a new discovery appears to our surprise

What a wonder to see the objects in the sky hang

And the possibility that it all started with a BANG

In a constant motion the universe is expanding

Full of many a quasar and seyferts, as well as many a galaxy

For most of these objects there is much we don’t know

Particularly there is little known of the sucking black hole

Of all the galaxies there is no doubt to say

That the greatest of all is the one and only Milky Way

Within each galaxy there are stars without number

Which burn bright until they fall into a nebulous slumber

With binary, variable and clusters of stars

Up close are majestic, but seem as Christmas lights from afar

Of all the stars it is our sun we like the most

In our solar system party our sun is the host

Eight guests are invited including a dwarf and a belt

Although we shouldn’t get too close or we surely would melt

The planet closest to the sun is named mercury

On one side you’ll fry and the other side you’ll freeze

The next they called Venus for goodness sake

One distinct figure is its volcanic pancake

Mars is the planet all want to get to in a hurry

Could this be because of a volcano the size of Missouri

The next planet has a perfect amount of water and turf

It is the most habitable planet, we call it Earth

Jupiter, the giant, is a common one that you can easily see

It has the most moons of all with a total of sixty-three

One of the planets has some of the most amazing things

This of course is Saturn with its most spectacular rings

Uranus is one that you will also often hear

Each moon is named after a character of Shakespeare

One planet that you might have heard of a lot

Is Neptune with its famous and large blue spot

Another object has been quite a dispute

From the classification of planet, Pluto got the boot

All these things make up the space up above

The more you learn, the more that you love

  2. Science and poetry are a powerful blend,
They can make one's mind whirl and bend.
Thanks for the words so cleverly said,
Dear Jeffrey, my son, our minds, you well fed.

  3. Jeff - thank you for including this magnificent poem. Was this for a specific assignment. It sure reflected some of the things you have learned (unless you knew that already). p.s. - I liked dad's comment too.
