Presented on the MHS stage last Wed., Fri. & Saturday evenings - "STEPPING OUT", is a good-natured comedy play that chronicles several months in the life of a beginning adult tap dance class. Each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. Vera (Sarah C.) Is a busy body, middle aged English woman with a rich, non-attentive husband who meddles in everyone's life. The instructor is a former Broadway/Chorus Line understudy. And then there is Mrs. Fraser (Rachel) who pounds out piano accompaniment for the practice routines,. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of dance steps in this kind of low-rent "A Chorus Line".
Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the acerbic pianist Mrs. Fraser, who acts as both support and hindrance and sort of substitute mother, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of dance. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play -- the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. Tenseness in the class builds week after week when the class accepts an invitation to actually perform for a charity community fund raiser. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, but they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync.
Whoa Baiba!!!!! Man I wish I would have come down to see that. You two girls looked amazing. Sarah, You are such the actress. We Cornwalls are pretty darn good at those English accents. What amazing tapping too. Rachel, You were hilarious. Nice piano skills. Oh what a talented family we have!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a musical not a fall Play. Rachel great piano skills, you were funny but we know why you were cast at that part. One you are a senior 'old,' second you can play the piano, and third you got all your tapping out in Millie.
ReplyDeleteSarah, WOW!!! You accent was excellent. I can't believe how many costume changes you had. (I must admit I recognized some of your costumes.) Sarah great tapping. It seems like you had a huge part for being a sophomore. Watch out MHS stage.
I am sorry that we missed it. Dad thanks for making such a great video so I felt like I was there. Maybe we can get a mini performance over Christmas.
PS did alison do the choreography?
Katie: Sarah really did have a large part (a large part for a sophomore, not necessarily for a Cornwall). And she did a great job, a really great job. Sarah came out for curtain call 2nd to last - right before the lead. Rachel definitely magnified her part, in fact the video probably makes it seem more than it was. Sarah had lots and lots of lines in interchanges with everyone else and did them all wonderfully. We are proud of two Cornwall girls on stage.
ReplyDeleteMan Sarah how many costume changes did you have?? Yikes! Save some for everyone else! Just teasing! Looks great! Great work Sarah and Rachel. Way to go! I'm always impressed!
ReplyDeleteI am trying to beat Mb, she is on the other computer. I think she is going to say WOW, you had a lot of costume changes. It all has been said already. but you too were great, I am glad that my GENES and drama is rubbing off so well.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I sure did enjoy the zoom in this video, I believe it is the first of such performances. It was nice from top hats to tapping toes
The girls were fantastic and so was the camera. I took the shot of Rachel singing to Irving Berlin - and I was clear across the auditorium and back about 7 rows. Dad and I really enjoyed watching it three times.
