I WAS FLOORED...
This week the focus was looking down.... at the floor.
In preparation for finishing the wood floor the hearth tiles got a thorough deep cleaning and a wood trim. (We don't want to splash harsh cleaner on our newly finished flooring.)
The room was completely cleared out...for the first time ever. Yes - the deceiving linoleum border was pulled up... and the 1000 little nails that tacked it in place.
Nail holes and blemishes were patched or cleaned up such as this knot hole which got a wood plug. It is right in front of the fireplace. Originally it just had a tin metal plate nailed over it.
Thursday - Dad was at-one with the rented floor sander. It worked great. This is a new model of sander (as compared with the drum type sander Dad used way back when and vowed never to do this floor sanding/refinishing job again).
After going over the floor 10 times with different grits of sandpaper it was time to do the edges by hand/palm sander.
The gapping cracks between the floor boards were cleaned out of 100+ years of dirt and dust
The gapped joints between the boards were then filled with a 50 year elastomeric caulk (so they don't fill up with dust and lint again). Dad came up with a great system of masking off the joints and THEN caulk. It worked great but ended up using enough blue tape to go 2.4 lengths of a football field.
With the joint caulk dry then a stain pre-conditioner was applied. This will help even out the finish stain in the soft fir wood.

Dad you are working so hard and it looks so great. I have to admit it makes me think how did you do our whole house, work full time, and be the best dad ever. I can't wait to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteWhat a job, and what a job well done. as I told you on the phone, but I want the world, or just our little world to know that it looks great. Great J-O-B.
