How convenient that our own Kent Neeley Cornwall's birthday is on a Family History Friday. I am going to try to piece together some things about Kent's birth, but he knows my sign-in information so that he can change things if he needs to. I don't know if all of you know that Kent, the second child born to Shirl and Lenore Neeley was actually due on April 1st. Boy did he fool his mom and dad when he came 5 weeks early and appeared on Friday, February 26th weighing in at 5 pounds 4 ounces. The bill below not only shows that it cost $114.43 to have a baby in 1954, it also indicates that Baby Kent stayed in the hospital for 16 days (and that only cost $114.43). When did Lenore go home? How did she manage things? We would love to have more details. Must have been a pretty scary thing to have a five pound baby in those days. He was born at L.D.S. Hospital (where I was born several years later - I always like to rub in the several years later part!!!). I always thought our babies looked like me, but the picture above sure looks like many of the Cornwall kids. So Cute.
Apparently you got your picture in the newspaper when you born in those days - unless you were in the newspaper for some other noteworthy achievement dad - let us know.
With an early birth, Kevin and Kent ended up being less than 14 months apart. Looks like Kevin is pretty thrilled to have a little brother. Kent was referred to as "Baby Kent", but for Kevin it worked its way down to BEKE. The name stuck for many years and is a term of endearment. One story I remember being told from Lenore is that at one point she asked Kevin to go and check on Kent to see if he was asleep. He came back and said - "One eye closed and one eye ope. Starting a family with two little boys that are close together sounds like a beautiful thing. "Don't you just love these pictures from the 50's???
Love this beautiful picture of Grandma Cornwall. Two things about this picture. LOVE the dress. I am hoping that the coloring is accurate on the picture because that means I LOVE the lipstick - way to rock the red Lenore and it means that Ilo has a real chance of getting some golden locks like his dad. P.S. - I think from the nose down it is Ilo all the way and they have matching eye brows!!! Happy Birthday Kent - you are the most amazing and wonderful person I have ever met. What a blessing to have you in our lives.

Just a few comments:
ReplyDelete- I am sure it is somewhat amazing that starting out at 5lb. 4oz. I grew into the hulking man that everyone knows today.
- About getting my photo in the paper - perhaps it went something like this. I went to the newspaper editor and explained that, (and this line is for Sarah) "my daddy said I'm a miracle". "I am sure my picture should be in the paper." "No son. We have no record of it". "Excuse me, but my dad said I should have my picture in the paper..." Etc... Etc... Etc...
- It was fun to have a brother only 14 months older. Up until Jr. High we did a lot of stuff growing up together.
- Obviously one does not need a fancy expensive seat in which to set one's baby while one does the laundry in the basement of the apartment building. . . just use the janitor's sink!
If I had to pick favorite posts on the blog this would be in the top. Those photos are gold!!! Happy, happy birthday! I hope it was a great day celebrating this great day!
ReplyDeleteOld photos are just so fun and aesthetically appealing. Thank you for sharing. Glad you were born father.
