Nancy Haws Haws
The following is a letter written circa 1880 by Nancy Haws, daughter of John Haws and Nancy Masters and was placed in a corner stone in Provo:

"My Dear Children, I write this letter to you, which is to be put into what is called the Jubilee Box, and given to you 50 years from now.

I was born in Wayne County, Illinois 25 December, 1840. My father's name was John Haws. He was born July 25, 1798 in Logan County, Kentucky. He was married 17 September, 1819 in Butler County, Kentucky to Martha Masters, who was born 13 February, 1802 in Surry County, North Carolina. My parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the year 1843 in Wayne County, Illinois*. We left our home in Illinois in 1850 in April to gather with the Saints in the Valley of the Mountains. We traveled with ox team and arrived in Salt Lake City in October of the same year."

Nancy (our ancestor and maternal great-grandmother of Melvin J. Hodkinson) was 5th of 11 children of John and Martha Haws.  All 11 children were born in Illinois and came west with their parents.  Each of the 11 children lived to adulthood and all married (except one).  They were of hardy stock with 7 of the 11 living to an old age.   Nancy Haws married Albert Haws (no known relation) in Provo in 1857.  Albert's father is Gilbreth Haws, who helped settle Provo (see post of Aug. 01, 2014).
