MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE .... LAKE

Saturday August 25th was the last play day before school started for the BYU/Provo kids. We wanted to do something special so Dad (yeah Dad!) organized an expedition to canoe on Mirror Lake and roast hot dogs. Both events proved to be... shall we say... memorable. The canoeing weather turned into rain, hail and a stiff cold wind at 10,000 ft. (It had been 90 degrees all week.) Then the J-dogs, tho' wonderfully grilled, ended up being shared with another family. This was a nice thing to do but half a J-dog is akin to torture. Also, being the last weekend before school started half of northern Utah and southwestern Wyoming seemed to also have decided it was a good day to visit the area.
Yes, the event was memorable, but not the way we had hoped and intended. Before we left... none to soon for anyone... we decided to document the event with a few photos near the boat launch shore.
Ah, ah... dejavu. There have been three Cornwall kids on those rocks before.

Yes... reflecting on August 1986, the three older Cornwall kids paid a visit, with dad, to the shores of Mirror Lake. Jeffrey was a newborn and stayed with mom back at the cabin. The intent was to give mom a nice loooooong break from her 2, 4 & 6 years olds.

Three significant things were different between the two trips.
  • In 1986 the weather was fine and the lake was indeed a mirror
  • In 1986 we had the lake nearly to ourselves
  • In 2012 the Cornwall kids thought ahead and brought shorts and swim suits
On both the 1986 and 2012 trips we stopped at the upper Provo River Falls on the way down. 26 years ago, Dad coached Jason and Robbie out as far as they dared go on the rock outcropping with the roaring falls behind them.
Dad again coached a son out on the rock outcropping on the recent trip. The Utah drought has taken it's toll on the gpm flow.

The group took advantage of scampering around the rocks and stream bed... a rare opportunity.

  1. oh, my goodness, this post is so fun. I don't remember the 1986 trip but thanks for taking me. It sure looks like all those who went on the 2012 trip will always remember it. Thanks Dad.

  2. Thanks for the break back in 1986 dad!!! Glad that I was not responsible for the impromptu swim wear - but it is fun looking back. Thanks also dad for the adventure in 2012. I think we made the best of it - and it will be so much more memorable because of the unique circumstances.
