Sarah and I had a very special treat last night. We were invited to use the Terrill's opera tickets (Sister Terrill is having a surgeical procedure on her knees this morning). We went with Rene Lehman. It is a 5 hour opera with an hour lecture before the performance starts so we had a full evening.
We started the evening off by having a picnic at the tables in front of the Dorothy Chandler Music Center. We attended the pre-lecture given by the conductor - James Conlon (his picture is on the right above Sarah in the picture above). Boy did I learn alot. He is passionate about Wagner. Another special treat was that Placido Domingo (pictured on the left above Sarah's head) played the part of Siegmund. He was amazing along with everyone else.
We were in the balcony but with a tilted stage they were great seats. Thank heaven for the subtitles above the stage. The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion is a beautiful place - loved the chandelliers.
Check out the opening of act three - a PBS special - very different staging than ours - but you can get an idea of the music.
Ahhh... The Ride of the Valkyrie music to open the 3rd act. One of the great classical numbers of all time. Perhaps Wagners best. I loved it as a kid... still do. FYI - A valkyrie from old Norse mythology is one of a host of female figures who choose those who die bravely in battle. Often pictured on great horses they descend and bring the fallen warrior to their afterlife in the hall of the slain, Valhalla. It's nice you girls had a 'lahvelee evening awt thee 'Ahpera.
What a very specail outing, to the OPERA. Thank you for including the clip. It entertained Elizabeth for about 8 minutes. It is wonderful to be so cultured.
To: Jason and Elizabeth - If you want to see a 5 minute opera instead of the 5 hour version go here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDwDo_hTs2Q&feature=related It's a classic a true classic.
Sound like it was a lot of fun. I don't think I could sit still for that long, I'm sure I couldn't go without a bathroom break for that long! What a treat for you all!
boy did that look like fun, I am glad that you were able to have that experience. Thank you for sharing it.
