I have to set this story up a little bit. You should read and follow in order, Don't skip to the end it is not as fun. Marybeth and I were getting ready for a soccer game tonight. We were getting dressed in our gear and making sure that everything was ready to go. Jewelry is not allowed, not even wedding rings. So if we remember we try to take them off and leave them at home so they are nice and safe, and that is where the story picks up.......
Marybeth was being so nice and remembered about the rings and asked if she could take my ring and put it in our usual spot. I agree and Mb proceeds to take my ring off of my finger. Everything seems to be normal, but all of a sudden I notice out of the corner of my eye that it slips from her grasp.....
Did I say slip...I meant flew out of her hand. This is the best picture on here. This is the ring that is "flying" off my hand and heading for the floor.
We really did think it was a problem, because the worst that would happen was that it hit the floor and would roll and we would go and pick it up, Nope not this time. As Mb took it from my hand and it fell, all of a sudden I hear it hit the floor and then CLANK!! It hits metal and sounds like it just fell deep into the unknown. If you can believe it, It fell perfectly into the tiny gap and hit the bottom that is a foot to 2 feet. It was so unbelievable, we could not believe that that happened, it would never happen again in a Million Years.
Marybeth quickly lost all the color in her face and tears started to well up in her eyes. This "reenactment" does not do it justice. I wasn't helping, because I think that I started to laugh.
I have never seen Marybeth so worried so quickly. She dropped straight to her knees and started searching, trying to see if she could see it right away. We both took turns holding the flash light trying to see if we could locate it but we were not having any success.
After the initial search we took the grate off and looked at the bottom. I don't know if you can see it but it was like an inch thick of lint, like the the thing that you change in the dryer. We thought there was no way that we would every find it.
After searching frantically (before and after the soccer game) for a half hour or so, searching every square inch of the grate we missed the back side and there it was just sitting there. We both had really huge smiles on our faces.
But it was not over, We still had to get it out. After scouring the house looking for the right tool to make the capture possible, The ole' "wire hanger" is always a good option. I felt like James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Jack Bauer (all have the initials J.B.) all rolled into one.
It was a little tricky at first, But after bending and messing with it a little bit I was able to hook it and slowly bring it to the top.
Finally we got it, and we can breathe easy, it was close there for a little while.
It was so funny, we had to post about it. We can sit back and laugh at it now.
Well that is quite the story. And quite the telling. First... so glad you got the precious jewelry back. Just wait til you have a floor grate with kids around. Perhaps you may remember the cavernous void at 331. A lot of things ended up down in the pit... and not by accident many times. And the heater at 331 WAS the heat source for the house, so when a crayon, for example, was the "lost" object, even if we didn't know it was lost, our noses told us pretty quickly. Thanks for your fun tale Robb.
ReplyDeleteDad and I read this post together last night. It was a great story to read together and not jump to the end. I'm very glad this tale had a great ending!!! Thanks for the details and the reenactment.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a story! That was awesome! I definitely would have been frantically crying until we got the ring back. Jason ring isn't very nice and isn't worth a penny, but it has sentimental value, and I would have balled!! Thanks for sharing. I'm glad it all turned out ok.
ReplyDeleteWhat a reenactment! I'll admit that at first I thought to myself, "How did they get a picture of it flying?" because the last I'd heard was that it was Lost - period. But hooray! And a victory on top of it all!
ReplyDeleteYea - let's hear a little bit more about the game . . . Pictures anyone . . . Score . . . Bragging!!!
